What is com.apple.bird? Why does it grow so big?
When trying to clean up their hard disk, some users discover ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.bird is pretty big, sometimes in the order of many gigabytes. What is it?

‘Bird’ is part of the iCloud structure. You would have a large cache if there are pending documents to upload or process.
Over time, the com.apple.bird cache is generally kept cleaner than you’re thinking. Mine is 400 KB [that’s K, not even M]
You can diagnose this with brctl — which has a diagnose command and a log command. Unless you are sure you have a bug in the cache — I wouldn’t delete the files as they might cause you at best — another upload of the original content and at worst — cause errors or data loss of iCloud backed documents.
With that large a cache you should be able to dump and then monitor whatever categories/classes of data have the most size.
brctl dump It’s exceptionally verbose and you might not want to spend time learning what it does — but the data is quite helpful in determining what’s actually happening and gives you an option before reaching out to AppleCare or another support tech in cases where you don’t see the cache clearing itself over time.

On my Mac Pro 3,1 (El Cap) the Caches folder (in ~/Library) is 119GB. The Adobe subfolder takes up 40GB which I would expect because I have a very large Bridge image database.
The folder com.Apple.bird is the main culprit at 86GB.
I understand it is related to iCloud and have seen people post that their com.apple.bird folders were very large due to WhatsApp backups.
If I search Caches for «whatsapp» only one folder is found and it’s just 5MB.
The biggest part of com.apple.bird is made up of 189 files ranging in size from 240-660MB with one being 1,9GB. They are listed as «TextEdit Documents» and have alphanumerical codes as filenames. In total they are 76GB.
Interestingly, these large files have modification dates that are either 4 or 7 days apart.
Any idea what these big files might be and if they can be deleted?

Я уже писал о том, куда девается место на диске компьютера или ноутбука Apple и о программе, которая поможет это выяснить. В ходе очередной проверки я обнаружил, что очень много места занимают непонятные файлы в папке com.apple.bird.
Всё место на диске, которое изображено в левом розовом квадрате, занимает какой-то кэш. И занимает немало.
Что за кэш com.apple.bird и можно ли его удалить?
Это кэш для загрузки и синхронизации с хранилищем iCloud. Там могут быть обрывки фотографий, чатов whatsapp и прочая ненужная и бесполезная информация. Я в облаке держу только контакты и документы — никаких объёмных данных не храню, а из доступных 5 гигабайт в облаке я использую только 1ГБ.
Как удалить кэш com.apple.bird
Просто так в папку Library вас никто не пустит — она скрыта от посторонних глаз. Можно включить отображение скрытых элементов в файндере, но делается это через терминальные команды. Проще всего установить GrandPerspective (она ещё не раз пригодится), выбрать нужный файл, жмякнуть по нему правой кнопкой и выбрать «показать в Finder» (reveal in finder). Вы сразу окажетесь в нужной папке. Всё содержимое com.apple.bird можно безболезненно удалить.
В моём случае я получил около 30ГБ свободного места. А некоторые пользователи жалуются, что у них этот кэш раздался до 200ГБ. Это непорядок, но проблема общеизвестная.
